James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was a playwright and novelist who is chiefly remembered as the creator of Peter Pan. Barrie was born in Scotland and moved to London in 1885 where he would reside for the remainder of his life. George Washington Cable, an American author and critic, was born in New Orleans and fought for the South in the Civil War. His first collection of tales of life in the south was Old creole days (1879). In 1884 he went on a reading tour with Mark Twain. He moved to Northampton, Mass., in 1885.
